Judging Your Carvings
Joanne Caroll lives near Sacramento and has been a carving judge for 30+ years. She will share tips on how we can become better carvers, whether formally judged by others or self-judged.
The California Carvers Guild (CCG) is the umbrella organization over dozens of clubs around the state. CCG has a long-standng formal judging program. They train and mentor judges for quality and consistency. Many carving shows no longer judge their entries (including the ones in Oregon), but nevertheless, the guidelines can help us self-judge our own work or help us look at the work of our peers so we can learn vicariously.
Joanne will talk about their judging program, the 70+ different categories of carvings, and the criteria and scoring system they use. She will also demonstrate how she would judge a variety of carvings to help us see how the system works.
If you have project that you would like her to consider judging, send an email to lpwade@gmail.com. If selected you will be asked to send several photos from different angles.
